Madaba: City of Mosaics

Madaba, the 'City of Mosaics', is famous for the 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land inside St George's church — the oldest surviving floor map of the region. Museums and local workshops carry the mosaic tradition into the present day.

Fun walking side streets and excellent grilled food make Madaba an easy half-day stop. It also works as a Dead Sea base. Travellers who hire car & driver in Jordan route through Madaba and Mount Nebo on the way south, and full package tours to Jordan nearly always include it.
