The Great Arab Revolt (1916–1918) saw Sharif Hussein of Mecca lead Arab forces against the Ottoman Empire, with the young Prince Abdullah and, in the south, British liaison officer T.E. Lawrence inspiring the desert campaign through Hejaz, Aqaba and into Syria.
Aqaba was famously taken from the landward side by Arab forces in July 1917. Its great flagpole commemorates the revolt. Travellers who hire car & driver in Jordan trace this history at Aqaba and Wadi Rum, and full package tours to Jordan cover the revolt through the southern sites.
